The local community has been shocked and saddened by the tragic death of popular Rowville teenager Daniel Draper. Fifteen year old Daniel died in the Monash Medical Centre on 28th December 2004 after suffering a brain aneurysm on Boxing Day evening.
Like thousands of Victorians, Daniel had attended the Boxing Day Test Match at the MCG, an annual ritual for the Draper family and friends. Returning home after an enjoyable day at the cricket, Daniel complained of a severe headache and collapsed.
An outstanding young sportsman, Daniel excelled at both cricket and football. He played locally for Rowville Cricket and Football Clubs but had also played in many regional representative teams in both sports.
Daniel was due to be vice captain of the U16 Ferntree Gully & District Cricket Association team in the annual January carnival involving teams from other Victorian regions.
Daniel, affectionately known as “DJ”, was a student at Brentwood Secondary College.
Public reaction to Daniel’s passing has been quite remarkable. The attendance at his funeral service was such that the Boyd Chapel at Springvale Crematorium could have been filled many times over. Loud speakers had to be erected outside the chapel to enable the huge gathering to hear touching and heartfelt eulogies from family, friends and the sporting community. Hundreds of mourners later paid their respects at the Rowville Cricket Club rooms, the scene of many of Daniel’s sporting triumphs and happiest moments.
Parents Marion and Ray and younger brother Chris wish to sincerely acknowledge the help, kindness and support which they have received since their devastating loss of Daniel. The family would like to truly express their heartfelt thanks to the unknown number of people who have shown such compassion and caring in so many ways.
